I f*cking hate them.
And no, not just because they are ads. In fact, some of them are actually pretty cool (Apple has done some amazing ones on the Wall Street Journal and ESPN homepages). But, even Apple’s are annoying. But why?
Well, as much fun as they try and make them with all kinds of crap flying all over the screen, zooming in and out, and bouncing through the normal page, they disable the rest of the site. It kills my experience as a user, especially when I’m actually looking for something and not just casually browsing.
And have you ever tried to turn one off? It’s tough. You’ve got to find the point of origin and then find the tiny little ‘x’ or “disable ad” button. Not cool. And some of them last forever. The worst offender of this lately has been Yahoo!, which seems to have a new, yet equally frustrating, ad every couple days.
Now, this is primarily a rant, so I don’t really have any suggestions for ad people to do anything different. All I know is, if this keeps up, I’ll be finding sites that aren’t doing it and getting my information there. And if that’s a trend that users follow, it could spell ad dollar trouble for some sites.
Found any truly annoying advertising online lately?
